There one was a time when we lived in segregation, people of different races were not allowed to be around or "mix" with different races. In 1967 the United States Supreme Court passed a law allowing interracial marriage. Well someone forgot to mention that to Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Louisiana. He refused to marry Beth Humphrey (white), 30, and her boyfriend, Terence McKay (black), 32, both of Hammond. It makes me really sad that I just had to put the races of those two people in parenthesis, but it's important to the story.Oh but Bardwell, is totally not a racist. At least that's what he claims. "I have lots of black friends. I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house. My main concern is for the children." His view on the matter is that children that are a result of an interracial marriage have problems, and he doesn't want to be a part of that. Maybe someone should tell him that multiracial Americans make up 6.8 million of the population (in 2000).
Civil rights activists are calling him to resign, since he can't seem to complete on of the duties assigned to him as his role of justice of the peace.
